With Norrie in mind I note that Facebook in the US (not yet in Australia) has announced that users will be able to choose some "50 different possibilities and permutations of gender identification".

The NY Times quotes an enthusiast commenting that

Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of requests for additional terms. It speaks to how important Facebook is in people’s lives. Having only two options was a big problem.
